UTAH’S EMPLOYERS AND INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS SHOULD BE THE ONES THAT DETERMINE THE STRUCTURE OF THE STATE’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

  • Through insurance premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, and taxes, Utah’s employers and individual citizens are the sources of ALL of the state’s healthcare dollars. Last year that amounted to about $14 billion -- and only 50% of those dollars were spent on direct patient care.
  • Currently, insurance companies, hospitals and legislators are controlling the debate about healthcare reform.
  • However, money talks. As the source of all healthcare dollars, employers and individual citizens have the critical mass, the economic strength, and the business know-how to design and implement a healthcare system that works for them.

   WHAT DO MOST EMPLOYERS
AND INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS WANT

  • AFFORDABILITY: Currently, only about 50% of healthcare dollars are spent on direct patient care (see Statistics)
  • TRANSPARENCY: Currently, there is no way for employers or individuals to determine how their healthcare dollars are being spent.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY: Currently, there is no way for employers or individuals to distinguish between valid medical expenses and waste.
  • OPEN ACCESS: Most patients would like to be able to see any healthcare provider of their choosing.
  • PORTABILITY: Most employers and individuals would like to be able to change insurance carriers as needed without penalty.
  • COORDINATED MEDICAL RECORDS: As long as privacy is protected, most patients would like their medical records to be coordinated and readily available at any caresite of their choosing.

WHAT SINGLE CHANGE IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY WILL PROVIDE ALL OF THESE BENEFITS

  • The establishment of an independent, uniform, statewide healthcare information system. (see Rationale)

HOW CAN EMPLOYERS AND INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS
REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE
  • Employers and individual citizens are the sources of all healthcare dollars.
  • All insurance carriers and hospitals are competing with each other for healthcare dollars. Competition benefits the buyer.
  • The current healthcare system relies on the lack of organization among employers and individual citizens.
  • By joining together in a common effort, employers and individual citizens have the critical mass, the financial strength, and the business know-how to require that all of the state’s insurance carriers and hospitals implement programs and systems that truly benefit all Utahns.
